Act Your Age

I stumbled on this movie called "Act Your Age" when my co-host Doug showed it to me. The plot revolves around former Y&R actor Michael Muhney as Lake, a struggling actor. He keeps getting turned down for roles because he is too young, but casting directors compliment him on his acting. Adding to this is his fear of old people as his parents died in a car accident years prior. He tries maintaining a relationship with his younger sister who lives with their aunt as well as his nurse girlfriend (played by Adrienne Frantz). He gets an idea to pretend to be an old person with the help of his friends (a doctor that can make him look old and a clumsy friend named Vaughn who provides much foil/comic relief for him). His plan to pretend to be old works and he gets a job in a play. To ensure authenticity the producers send "the old man" to a nursing home. Here is where Lake/old man gains more respect for old people and himself. Pat Morita is in the movie as well :)
I give this movie 4 stars. Being an independent movie (and co-written by Michael) it displays his comic timing and physical comedy. But there are a few scenes that just hit too close to home to his current predicament. There's one line where Vaughn tries coaxing Lake to go to a party by saying "Come on there'll be drinks and girls. Young girls." That kinda creeped me out. And even the fact that Lake freaks out about old people when there's an unconfirmed rumor he didn't like Jeanne Cooper because she was old. Yes this rumor is unconfirmed, but knowing that rumor is out there WITH this movie that he co-wrote just a lil too "real."

After watching the movie I call it "Victor Adam Newman Jr., the Missing Years." Michael never slipped into Adam Newman, but it felt very much like what Adam's life woulda been like prior to moving to GC. The thing I love about MM is his ability to have chemistry with EVERYONE he's in a scene with. Maura West, Kim Zimmer, and Martha Byrne have this same quality. I definitely recommend if you are a Michael Muhney fan. It's funny and a very original idea. The only thing is as an old man he has this RIDICULOUS large grey beard. Dunno why. It's so unnecessary to his character and slightly distracting. And there's a weird scene where as an old man he visits his aunt...I'm not gonna give it away, but just a strange scene.
